Halfway Through Your Internship Checklist

So, you’re about half way through your summer internship? How can you make sure you’ll stand out? Here are a few tips on how to shine this summer:

  • Reflect on your experience – if you’re happy with the opportunities you’ve had so far, ask for ways to become more involved in these projects. If you’re unhappy with the experience, you still have time to evaluate why and take initiative to make the most of the internship experience.
  • Schedule a formal mid-summer check in with your internship supervisor to evaluate your performance thus far. Ask about ways that you can continue to grow and develop professionally, as well as contribute to the team.
  • Stay busy – there is always work to be done! Ask your supervisor what he/she needs help with and volunteer to work on all types of projects.
  • Grow your network – ask colleagues out for coffee or lunch. Conduct a non-formal informational interview to learn about their career paths, experience within their roles, and for advice.

Steven Greenberg is the creator and anchor of the CBS Radio news program “Your Next Job”.  His features air 15 times each week on WCBS 880 in New York, and on other CBS radio news stations. He has written popular articles about job search for Forbes.com and CNN Money.com,  and his job board for jobseekers over 40 has been profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered.   He is also the founder of a recruiting firm and a temp agency.   He was general counsel and HR manager for one of the most successful toy manufacturers in the US.  He is an attorney who practiced at two highly prominent law firms in NY – Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft  and Chadbourne Parke. He lives in Westport, CT with his wife and four sons.

Making the Most of Your Internship Experience

Sanjana Kucheria, CAS ’16, is interning this summer with a real estate investment company. Here, she offers some tips on making the most of your internship experience.

It’s been two weeks since I started my internship at Cottonwood Residential, a real estate investment company. Honestly, this is my first internship out of my hometown as well, so I knew I had to make an extra effort to get acclimated to the city as well as the work environment. There are two other interns working along side me in Acquisitions.

My first week was…tough. Applying all of the knowledge gained in the classroom setting is different, and maybe even a little difficult, which is why I share with you my first tip:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if they may sound a little ridiculous to you. Even with everything I learned in classes and whatnot, I still had questions I needed to go the manager about. Luckily, he was more than happy to help, even going as far as saying, “I’m glad you’re trying to get this right”. Maybe not the best compliment out there, but here’s what I took away from it.

2. Learn what you have to (and more) early on. Whether that’s how to input numbers in excel or how to build a PowerPoint slide the way your company /boss wants it. It may look careless if you ask how to do something in the middle of your internship rather than in the beginning.

3. Take advantage of lunch breaks. It’s probably the only time you will get to talk to employees outside of your division. Ask them questions about their jobs, lives, etc. Don’t be the lone intern. No one will come up to you.

4. Show enthusiasm in your work. My internship requires me to do a lot of financial analysis of many properties. Although it may not sound real exciting, I look forward to tackling property after property when I walk into the office. Strike up a conversation with you boss/manager about industry/market trends, questions you had about a particular case etc. Showing that extra eagerness in your work and the company’s work will definitely make your experience all that more memorable.

Overall, just really enjoy each day of your internship!

International Student Discussion About Internships

On Thursday, April 17, Jinyue Zhang, a Masters student in the Management and Systems program at SCPS attended a special workshop hosted by the NYU Wasserman Center @SCPS called “Succeeding in Your Internship: International Student Roundtables”.

During the event, students had an opportunity to meet with NYU-SCPS international alumni and second-year graduate students who have interned at fantastic companies. The guests were settled at one of the roundtables, and eight or nine students as a small group asked questions and learned about the background of the guests. The discussion rotated every eight minutes. Soon after the rotation started, both the students and the guests became highly focused on the discussion. And after an hour and a half of talking and laughing, everyone found they gained great insight from the guests and generated a clearer direction about their internship search.

Here is some of the valuable advice offered forth by the special guests.

Tips about searching for the internship:

1.     Be fully prepared: “Spend 80% of your time building skills and your personal brand.” Said Mark Li (graduate degree in Integrated Marketing). Success is the accumulation of everyday effort. There are many things to do before you worry about how to network. You can sit down in the library to work on a resume that can highlight all your skills. You can read newspapers and blogs to become more familiar with the culture and job market in the US. You can also try to write a blog, or even an eBook, just to show your expertise in the specific industry.

2.     Be proactive: What’s the next thing you should do after the preparation work? Networking. That’s when you can show your knowledge, and impress people around you. Having a positive attitude is crucial. This is also important for an interview. During the interview, always remember to be confident, ask questions and be humble about learning.

3.     Take advantage of the resources: Luckily, there are plenty of resources we can use as NYU students. Search information on NYU CareerNet, make an appointment with one of the great career coaches, or join the Mentor Network. Finally, the use of LinkedIn cannot be overemphasized. Building a professional profile and participating in specific groups on LinkedIn will always help.

Tips about relationship building:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask: When you are already a part of the company, never hesitate to ask questions. This is when a new stage of networking begins. People are always glad to answer thoughtful questions. By asking questions, you’re able to have a better understanding of the corporate culture, and maybe gain more hands-on experience.

2. Dealing with culture shock: Many international students find themselves facing great differences in the working culture here. However, when you are knocking your head against the wall trying to fit into the new culture, don’t forget you have your own culture to help showcase your personality. For instance, instead of drinking coffee, Bill Yao (second-year M.S. Sports Business candidate) always makes himself a cup of tea in the office. And surprisingly, he found that people started a good conversation with him about Chinese tea.

As a first-year international graduate student in SCPS, I found this event more interesting and helpful than any others I’ve been to. More importantly, when talking to the second-year graduate students, I can’t help but think about what my career path will be by this time next year. Looking at what others have achieved will always motivate you to work harder. If you didn’t have a chance to attend this event, don’t miss another workshop like this in the future!

Talk a little bit about the specifics of your role in the marketing department

As a Marketing Intern, I have several different responsibilities. One aspect of my job is to develop effective social media content with our Outreach team. This includes analytics monitoring of our social media accounts and engaging our fans and followers on these channels. Occasionally, I will help create Business and Marketing plans with our CEO Nan Fisher. Regardless of your position at Nan Fisher Entertainment, there is never a dull moment- there is always something to do, or someone to help.

Tell us a bit about your role as an intern

“Hands-on” fails to describe the level of involvement the interns have here. Everyone’s opinions are valued, and the work we do has a tangible impact on the project. The small but comfortable atmosphere of the company lends itself to an open exchange of ideas and real responsibilities, which beats fetching coffee at a large company any day.

Describe the working atmosphere at Nan Fisher Entertainment

We all believe in the AAT Project and Nan Fisher, so working here has been a joy! Everyone is so supportive of each other, and I have made some great friends. If you want to have a truly interactive internship experience, I highly recommend landing a position at this company!

What is Nan Fisher Entertainment, and what we are working on now?

Nan Fisher Entertainment is a television production company based in Midtown Manhattan. Right now we are working on America’s Amazing Teens, or the AAT Project for short. The AAT Project is an online competition that will identify, mentor and manage exceptional teens whose discoveries will make a difference. We are one of the first online competitions that will provide a platform for young scientists, researchers, web developers, inventors, and entrepreneurs to help share their ideas with the world.

Wall Street Services Presents Tips for Resume Success

Have you always wondered what makes a resume stand out to a recruiter? Ideally, you want to provide evidence that your skills and experiences are a match for the job description as closely as possible. Apart from that, we want to share one specific insight that will boost your resume’s potential to entice a recruiter to give you a call.

The truth of the matter is that managers want people who get things done. The world is full of people who do things with little eye on the result. We look at hundreds of resumes each week and one of the key mistakes we see is listing tasks rather than accomplishments. By listing your accomplishments you will stand out and be noticed. Having your resume stand out as noticeable is the point of having a resume. If you are responding to a job posting, it is likely that hundreds of other people are responding as well. If your resume does not stand out, it will be lost in the sea of job seekers vying for the same few positions. In fact, the great probability is that your resume will first be screened by a junior person who knows little about the job you are applying for and is looking for three or four specific items.

Some Tips

AVOID: Listing your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities – for example:

-Researched breaks on aged swap payments to determine the cause for each.

-Prepared and analyzed daily reports

-Communicated with clients

INSTEAD: Detail an accomplishment that explicitly informs the tasks and technical abilities you have – for example:

-Extremely productive in risk reduction: reduced breaks from more than 6,000 to less than 100, completing the project ahead of target date

-Designed and implemented new daily reporting schematic which provided management with a wider range of critical information 2 hours earlier

-Provided critical information to over 4,000 clients
